Aciphex (Rabeprazole) delayed-release tablets are indicated for the healing of erosive or ulcerative gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD); maintenance of erosive/ulcerative GERD healing; treatment of symptomatic GERD; healing of duodenal ulcers; and treatment of hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Uses

1. Short-term healing of a gradual breakdown (erosion) or sore (ulceration) in the esophagus which may be caused by the backward flow of gastric acid from the stomach into the esophagus (gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD);
2. Maintenance of healing of erosive or ulcerative GERD;
3. Treatment of daytime and nighttime heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD;
4. Short-term (up to 4 weeks) healing of an ulcer in the duodenum;
5. Slimination of Helicobacter pylori, in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence in patients with a current duodenal ulcer or a duodenal ulcer in the past 5 years;
6. Medical conditions that result in the body secreting too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
7. Rabeprazole may also be used in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection to reduce the risk for duodenal ulcer recurrence.
Uses:

How to take

Take rabeprazole once a day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; it should not be crushed, chewed, or split. You can continue taking antacids during rabeprazole therapy.
If you're using rabeprazole along with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, take all three drugs at the same time twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening. This three-drug regimen should be taken with meals.

Side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Less serious side effects may include:
· Headache
· Upset stomach or diarrhea;
· Insomnia or nervousness; or
· A rash or itching.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effects.

Precaution

If you have stomach ulcers caused by the H. pylori bacteria, rabeprazole could make the condition slightly worse. The doctor may order a test for H. pylori before prescribing this drug. If you test positive, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with rabeprazole.
Rabeprazole has not been tested in children under 18 years of age.

Drug interactions

There have been reports of an increase in the effect of the blood thinner, warfarin, by rabeprazole which theoretically could lead to increased bleeding. Patients taking warfarin should be monitored more frequently if the begin taking rabeprazole.
Rabeprazole may reduce the elimination of cyclosporin in the liver, thereby increasing cyclosporin levels in the blood and potentially lead to cyclosporin toxicity.
The absorption of certain drugs may be affected by changes in stomach acidity. Rabeprazole and other PPIs that reduce stomach acid reduce the absorption and concentration in blood of ketoconazole (Nizoral) and increase the absorption and concentration in blood of digoxin (Lanoxin). This may lead to reduced effectiveness of ketoconazole or increased digoxin toxicity, respectively.
Tell your health care provider if you are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
