Triamcinolone is a corticosteroid. It works by reducing inflammation and modifying the body's immune system.

How to take

Take Triamcinolone tablets by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take with milk or food to avoid stomach upset. If you are only taking Triamcinolone once a day, take it in the morning, which is the time your body normally secretes cortisol. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Side effects

Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome: increased appetite; indigestion; loss of appetite; nervousness or restlessness. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: severe skin rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, skin infection (redness, swelling, or oozing of pus). Additional side effects may occur if you take this medicine for a long time. Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects occur: Abdominal or stomach pain or burning (continuing); acne; bloody or black, tarry stools; changes in vision; eye pain; filling or rounding out of the face; headache; irregular heartbeat; menstrual problems; muscle cramps or pain; muscle weakness; nausea; pain in arms, back, hips, legs, ribs, or shoulders; pitting, scarring, or depression of skin at place of injection; reddish purple lines on arms, face, groin, legs, or trunk; redness of eyes; sensitivity of eyes to light; stunting of growth (in children); swelling of feet or lower legs; tearing of eyes; thin, shiny skin; trouble in sleeping; unusual bruising; unusual increase in hair growth; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting; weight gain (rapid); wounds that will not heal.

Precaution

Tell your doctor if you have an infection including chicken-pox, herpes, measles, tuberculosis (TB) or if you have ever had liver, kidney, intestinal, or heart disease; diabetes, blood clotting disorder, previous heart attack, glaucoma, cataracts, an underactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, mental illness, myasthenia gravis, osteoporosis, herpes eye infection, seizures, ulcers, a circulation disorder, or an immune disorder. If you have a fungal infection (other than on your skin), do not take Triamcinolone. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while using Triamcinolone, call your doctor immediately. Stomach problems may be more likely to occur if you drink alcoholic beverages while being treated with this medicine. You should not drink alcoholic beverages while taking this medicine, unless you have first checked with your doctor.

Drug interactions

This drug is not recommended for use with: Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen), Aspirin, barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions), Bosentan, calcium supplements, Carbamazepin, female hormones, including contraceptive or birth control pills, heart medicine, medicines for diabetes, medicines that improve muscle strength or tone for conditions like myasthenia gravis, phenytoin, rifampin, toxoids and vaccines, water pills. Before using Triamcinolone, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Triamcinolone; Atolone; Kenacort, aspirin, tartrazine (a yellow dye in some processed foods and drugs), or any other drugs. Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially cancer chemotherapy agents, anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin), arthritis medications, aspirin, cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), digoxin (Lanoxin), diuretics ('water pills'), estrogen (Premarin), ketoconazole (Nizoral), oral contraceptives, phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin (Rifadin), theophylline (Theo-Dur), and vitamins. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine and your dosing schedule is: One dose every other day: Take the missed dose as soon as possible if you remember it the same morning, then go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you do not remember the missed dose until later, wait and take it the following morning. Then skip a day and start your regular dosing schedule again. One dose a day: Take the missed dose as soon as possible, then go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and do not double the next one. Several doses a day:Take the missed dose as soon as possible, and then go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you do not remember until your next dose is due, double the next dose.

Storage

Triamcinolone should be stored at room temperature, 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) and protected from heat, and direct light.
