TEGRITAL, better known as Tegretol, (Carbamazepine) is prescribed for the treatment of seizure disorders, including certain types of epilepsy. It is also used in the treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (sever pain in the jaws) and pain in the tongue and throat.

Uses

TEGRITAL is used in the treatment of simple and complex partial seizures and in generalized seizures of the grand mal type. It is not used to treat petit mal seizures. TEGRITAL also is used to treat a painful nerve condition of the face called trigeminal neuralgia. Equetrol is used to treat bipolar disorder. Doctors may also use TEGRITAL for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal, cocaine addiction, and emotional disorders such as depression and abnormally aggressive behavior. It is also used to treat migraine headache and "restless legs

How to take

TEGRITAL should only be taken with meals, never on an empty stomach.

Side effects

Serious side effects include dangerously low red and white blood cell counts. Severe skin reactions can occur as well as serious liver abnormalities, such as hepatitis, resulting in jaundice. Low sodium levels and thyroid abnormalities have been described. Minor more common side effects include dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea, and vomiting. Rare patients with Asian ancestry rarely may develop severe skin reactions to TEGRITAL (Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis). These patients can be identified by genetic testing, and such testing is recommended for all Asian patients before starting therapy.

Precaution

Do not take TEGRITAL if you have a history of bone marrow depression (reduced function), sensitivity to TEGRITAL, sensitivity to tricyclic antidepressant drugs such as amitriptyline (Elavil). You should also not take TEGRITAL if you are on a MAO inhibitor antidepressant such as Nardil or Parnate, or if you have taken one within the past 14 days. There are potentially dangerous side effects associated with the use of TEGRITAL. If you experience symptoms such as fever, rash, sore throat, ulcers in the mouth, easy bruising, or reddish/purplish spots on the skin, notify your doctor immediately. These symptoms could be signs of a blood disorder brought on by the drug.

Drug interactions

TEGRITAL interacts with multiple drugs and caution should be used in combining other medicines with it. Lower levels of TEGRITAL are seen when administrated with phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), or primidone (Mysoline). Warfarin (Coumadin), phenytoin (Dilantin), theophylline, and valproic acid (Depakote, Depakote ER, Depakene, Depacon) are more rapidly metabolized with TEGRITAL, while TEGRITAL levels are elevated when taken with erythromycin, cimetidine (Tagamet), propoxyphene (Darvon), and calcium channel blockers. TEGRITAL also increases the metabolism (destruction) of the hormones in birth control pills and can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Unexpected pregnancies have occurred in patients taking both TEGRITAL and birth control pills.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
