Uses

Nimodipine (nye-MOE-di-peen) is used to improve symptoms caused by spasms as a result of a brain hemorrhage (ruptured blood vessels). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How to take

Take Nimodipine on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after eating. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Nimodipine.

Side effects

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: Diarrhea, flushing, headache, nausea. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black or bloody stools; depression, fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; severe dizziness, shortness of breath, severe or persistent constipation; swelling of the feet or hands; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; yellowing of the eyes or skin. Symptoms of overdose may include fainting; loss of consciousness; rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeat; severe dizziness. If you suspect an overdose of Nimodipine, seek medical attention immediately.

Precaution

Do NOT use Nimodipine if you are allergic to any ingredient in Nimodipine. Some medical conditions may interact with Nimodipine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have liver problems, heart problems (eg, slow heartbeat), shock due to serious heart problems, low blood pressure, fluid in your lungs, or if you have a history of heart attack. Tell your health care provider if you are taking Calcium channel blockers (eg, amlodipine) or other blood pressure medicines because actions and side effects may be increased by Nimodipine. This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Nimodipine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine. Nimodipine may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Nimodipine. Using Nimodipine alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. Lab tests, including blood pressure, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Nimodipine during pregnancy. It is unknown if Nimodipine is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while you are using Nimodipine.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, especially of: blood pressure drugs, intravenous (IV) calcium, heart drugs. Avoid any drugs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestants phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are examples). These drugs are commonly found in over-the-counter cough-and-cold products. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Nimodipine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

Storage

Store Nimodipine at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store in the original foil pack away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Nimodipine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
