Uses

Pantoprazole is used to treat damage to the esophagus associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production (e.g. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome). Pantoprazole is a member of the "proton pump inhibitor" class of acid blockers.

How to take

Take Pantoprazole tablets by mouth. This medication may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water; do not crush, break, or chew. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Side effects

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: Diarrhea, headache, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); chest pain, dark urine, fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness; vision changes; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Precaution

It can take several days of therapy with Pantoprazole before your stomach pains improve. Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition does not improve, or if it gets worse. You can take antacids for the occasional relief of stomach pain unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you otherwise.

Drug interactions

It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Pantoprazole with the following: Ampicillin (Omnipen); Iron; Ketoconazole (Nizoral); Warfarin (Coumadin).

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take two doses at once.

Storage

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from light and moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
